Lice Prevention

  • Screen your child for lice once a week by thoroughly checking their scalp and hair under good light.
  • Keep long hair pulled back in a braid or ponytail as much as possible during the school year.
  • Rosemary, Tea Tree, geranium, Eucalyptus, Lavender, etc. oils have been effective methods in preventing lice. A small amount of oil rubbed onto hair, neck, shoulders (on shirts) and wrists each morning. Small amounts of Kyolic oil has similar effects.
  • Dirty, oily hair is a deterrent to lice. They much prefer squeaky clean hair –adding a styling gel or hairspray to your child’s hair can help deter lice. Most lice preventative sprays also act in this manner by coating the shaft of the hair with product.
  • Do not share sweaters, jackets, gloves, mittens, scarves and hats with other classmates.
  • To prevent the spread of lice notify your school, friends and family immediately if head lice is detected on your child.
