Dear PS3 Parent and/or Teacher, We are writing to invite you to attend a Special Membership meeting of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), to be held on Wednesday. June 19, in the morning, from 8:40 – 9:40am sharp, in the Cafeteria. We are mindful that most teachers cannot attend at this time and, to encourage teacher participation, we invite teachers to submit statements, to send any representatives, and to attend the SLT meeting on Thursday morning (see below) where teachers and parents are equally represented. Per our PTA bylaws, this special meeting is being called, at the written request of 10 PTA members, to review and vote on a proposal by the Safety Working Group, introduced at the last PTA meeting on June 11, to allocate PTA funds as follows on a packet of security measures, which will be voted on separately: 1) Security Cameras - installation of security cameras to monitor entrances and exits in the building, at a cost of approximately $13,500; 2) Panic/Alarm Devices – 4 “panic” alarms – 1 for lobby desk, 1 for office, 2 that are portable and could be carried by school personnel, at a cost of approximately $2,500; 3) Building Door Security – enhancing and improving the fire doors and adding or repairing alarms, and repairing the gate from the cafeteria to Bedford St., at a cost of approximately $7,500. Should all of the proposals be approved, the Working Group is requesting an overall allocation of funds of $25,000.00 with additional funds reserved for change orders or costs associated with clean up.

The substance of this proposal will also be reviewed and discussed by our School Leadership Team (SLT) at its final meeting of the school year, on Thurs. June 20, in the morning, from 7:30 – 8:20am in the Parent Room 408. Parents and teachers not on the SLT are welcome to attend this meeting to observe, but not to participate in, the conversation.

We want to stress that the vote at the Special Membership Meeting is whether to authorize the PTA to allocate line item funds for any part(s) or the whole of this proposal and NOT whether to implement the proposal. The decision on whether to implement the proposal will rest with our principal, Lisa Siegman, in consultation with the School Leadership Team, the Division of School Facilities and the Department of Education Borough Safety Director.

Set-up is at 12 noon, lunch is served at 1pm, clean-up is at 2pm. This is wonderful way to thank PS3′s amazing teachers and staff. There are two ways you can help:

1. Set up and help serve lunch for the staff. We’ll meet up in the school lobby at noon and have 1 hour to set up. The lunch will begin at 1pm and clean-up will be done by 3 pm. 2. Bake or bring a favorite food item to fete the staff. Desserts and drinks are especially needed. An Amazing NIght at the Theater!

Thank you to everyone who made our Theater Benefit on Monday night such a wonderful, special and truly 3-Filled nite! To Addie Johnson/Daniel Talbott and Oliver Dow for stepping up and steering the ship; to our actor & writer parents Mark Ruffalo, Kenneth Lonergan, Cathy Curtin & Nicole Cox – and the company who joined them – for their magnificent artistry and generosity; to the team at the Signature Theatre for making us all feel so welcome; to Lamia and her staff at Le Souk for the delicious food (we’ll see you here next year, Lamia!); to Mike Rovner for the poster; to Adam Crescenzi, our theater artist in residence, for expertly guiding our kids through a playwriting blitz; to the students who wrote those amazing little plays that made us laugh so, so hard; and to all of you for supporting our school so generously. There was something magical about that night – with the rain coming down outside – that reminds us all why we just wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Thank you!

Belated thanks to our Field Day team for brilliant & flexible leadership last Friday. Camille Habacker, Sheri Von Seeburg, Liz Craig & so many others masterfully guided our kids through tug of war, marathons, parachuting, obstacle courses, and lots more – with grace, humor and very loud voices. Sure it was hot, sweaty and wet. But everyone had a great time and showed that a little rain can’t stop us. Team Corinth may have ended up with the most points – but everyone was a winner on Field Day! Thanks guys…

Harvest Day was Wednesday!

Many of our classes have been growing sprouts and seedlings this year, and some of our classes have been working/playing hard at the Battery Urban Farm. It all came together on Wednesday!

Chef Deborah (our Wellness in the Schools Chef) prepared 3 different Harvest Day treats for our kids. We passed out Lettuce salad with Sprouts (Grown at PS3!) with a Strawberry Vinaigrette, Kale salad with Lemon Mint Vinaigrette, and Spinach with Dill and Pickled Onions. The kids also ate (like it was candy!) freshly harvested Pea and Sunflower Sprouts.

It was really great to see how much our students loved to eat what they, and their fellow PS3-ers have grown. The Lettuce, Kale and Spinach were all very generously donated by Battery Urban Farm, and Herbs and Sprouts were all grown at school!

We also spoke about being kind to the earth, by bringing a re-usable water bottle to lunch, to reduce waste, and stacking the disposable trays to reduce garbage volume.

Ask your child what they sampled, and what they loved!

Afterschool on Half-Days

Monday, June 10th is a half-day (school dismisses at noon) and the Afterschool Program runs from 12pm to 6pm. There will be special programming (recreational games and a movie) from 12pm to 3pm, followed by regular activities from 3pm to 6pm.

School Safety Petition–350 Signatures and Counting!

Thanks to everyone who has signed the petition in support of a second School Safety Agent for our school. The Safety Working Group of the PTA has collected over 350 signatures this week. Volunteers will be collecting signatures on Friday, June 7th as well. If you have not signed the petition and would like to, please do so on Friday! As a reminder, PS3 has been assigned one School Safety Agent, Agent Mercado, who sits at the front desk. We are asking the NYPD and DOE for an additional School Safety Agent to help keep our school safe. This second agent can assist with security at school opening and dismissal, and can patrol the building while Agent Mercado mans the front desk. We are asking all parents to sign the petition to support this initiative. If you have any questions please ask the parents collecting signatures. Thank you!

Since the event on February 2, many current parents as well as alumni and friends of the school have been discussing the possibility of forming a “PS3 Alumni and Friends Association.”

The value of this association is manifold:
1.    It can help maintain PS3′s enduring values of the innovative, independent, and community-oriented arts-based curriculum and ethos.
2.    It can help keep the 42+ year legacy and story of PS3 alive (and thriving throughout the 21st century)
3.    It would be set up as a non-profit 501(c)3 that can raise funds to support the long-term goals of the school, programs, and specials which would include archiving the school’s history
4.    It could provide grants for initiatives that foster and promote PS3’s values to the neighborhood and larger world.

We are trying to get a sense from the alums if this type of association would be of interest. We will sending out a survey soon to gauge your opinions, but you should always feel free to email us if you are already “sold” on the idea!

We hope that in creating this mailing list and in hosting the celebratory event in February, we have generated enough excitement and momentum to create the kind of alumni and friend association that will help preserve and continue the legacy of PS3.

And on that note, we hope that this will serve as an effective way to keep everyone informed of exciting events at PS3.

Coming up this Saturday May 11th, from 11AM-4PM is the PS3 Spring Fling!
It will be held in the school auditorium and gym and Grove St. $10 per child; adults free. Bouncy houses! Haunted Glen! Music (including live karaoke)! Food! Art! Tatoos! Face Painting! etc. or to put it more simply: FAMILIES + PS3 + COMMUNITY PARTY = PURE JOY

Maybe you’ve aged out of such a thing, but it is such a vibrant, awesome and totally PS3 celebration of out community you might be interested in swinging by.

Parent Night Out Late Friday

Starting next Friday, April 26th, you can drop-off K-5 Graders at PS 3 ’til 6 for an ‘evening play-date’ filled with fun activities. Children will prep & cook their own food and sit down together for a family-style dinner. Chef Kelsey, our cooking instructor, will introduce them to healthy and delicious recipes. After dinner, kids can watch a movie or play games (their choice).

PTA Executive Board Elections Are Coming Up!

Whether you are already involved within the PS3 community, or you want to take a more active role in making our school better, take the plunge and run for a position. Here’s what you need to do to throw your hat in the ring:

Let a member of the nominating committee know you’re interested. Email Davina Fitzpatrick davinafitzpatrick@yahoo.com / Yin Ho yin.ho@contextmattersinc.com / Karen Shapiro karensshapiro@gmail.com

Send them a brief bio including the name/grade of your child/children at PS3 and describe why you are interested in running. Include a photo of yourself so the school community can get to know who’s running prior to the elections. The information you provide will be posted on the PS3 website.

Nominations should be submitted by May 14th

Elections will take place at the June General Membership PTA Meeting.

What is the Executive Board? The Executive Board consists of the PTA officers (Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries and Vice Presidents) and 2 to 6 Members-at-Large. All members of the Executive Board are obliged to attend monthly Executive Board meetings where issues regarding PS3 and specifically the PTA are discussed. Each member of the EB is entitled to one vote. Members of the PS3 community come to the Executive Board if they have questions, ideas or suggestions, want to create a committee, or need help resolving issues that come up within the school. Sometimes EB members attend via a conference call number but it is far better for everyone to meet in person at PS3. A lot of business is taken care of through email, so as an EB member, expect a fuller than usual inbox.

In general, it is helpful if two people share the officer positions but it is not mandatory.

Below is a brief description of the positions available. Feel free to speak with some of the current Executive Board members if you want the inside scoop. Or, check out our bylaws.

President / Co-President Presidents are the general overseers and facilitators of PTA business. They run Executive Board and General Membership meetings. They are our main ambassadors to our Principal Lisa and have regular meetings with her to discuss what’s going on at PS3 and how the PTA can help. One of the Co-Presidents attends monthly District 2 Council meetings. One of the Co-Presidents is a member of the School Leadership Team. PTA Presidents are also co-signers of all checks written by the PTA. Don’t feel you need to be an expert on everything PS3 to jump into this position – you’ll learn on the job.

Treasurer / Co-Treasurer The Treasurer/Co-Treasurers keep track of PTA income and expenditures and helps create and maintain budgets and make financial statements available when requested. They present updated budgets at every EB and General Membership meeting. They also prepare and provide the January 31st interim and June annual financial accounting reports. One of the Co-Treasurers is a co-signatory on checks issued by the PTA along with one of the Co-Presidents.

Secretary / Co-Secretary The Secretary/Co-Secretaries take the minutes of Executive Board and General Membership meetings and keep track of correspondence and documentation of the PTA. They make sure PTA contact information and regularly scheduled meeting times are posted in the lobby and on the website. Basically, the Secretary positions are the communication hub for the PTA.

Vice President (2 positions) VPs participate in the discussion at Executive Board meetings and help to facilitate the business of the PTA. They assist the Co-Presidents and take over the duties of the Co-presidents should one of them be absent. If a co-president needs to leave the position, the VPs may fill the vacancy without a special election. The VP positions are important leadership roles and the expectation is that parents in these positions are active throughout the PS3 community.

Members at Large (2 – 6 positions) Members-at-Large participate in the discussion of Executive Board meetings and help to facilitate the business of the PTA similar to the VPs. One of these positions will be reserved for a parent new to PS3 in the fall of 2011. This is a great place to start if you are interested in really knowing what’s going on at PS3 and are willing to take an active role to make our school better.

What we do
The Yearbook is an all-school yearbook which features highlights of all of the events that make PS 3 unique – Spring Fling, Square Dance, the Antiquarian Book Fair, and this year Hurricane Sandy, etc. The yearbook is paid for by ads so that we can offer the book to the students for a nominal price or better, free.

Each teacher has the chance to personalize his/her class pages, and every graduate has a separate photo acknowledgment.

Class parents are responsible for getting the class photos and layouts done. FOR B/W RESOLUTION OF PHOTOS SHOULD BE 300 DPI. CAMERA PHONE IMAGES ARE LOW-RESOLUTION 72 DPI

Photos
We are always looking for photos of the children. Clear, well-lit images of any PS 3 event are always welcome. If you can send in Black & White photos, they will print better. We have created a page where you can upload images – click here –> UPLOAD IMAGES. Please provide your child’s Name and Room number in the IMAGE INFO space; additionally, if you could please name the file with the name and room number as well it would be helpful. Please submit images as files type JPEG, or PDF, or PNG. No pictures can be returned, so please submit copies only.

Great Scientists/Artists in Residence

Do you know about some of the SAIR projects in our school this year?

1. ART OF HISTORY: Under the guidance of an educator, from the NY Historical Society, our kids learnt that families have existed for a long time and that they share similarities and differences with families today. Kids looked at artwork from different periods and learnt about portraiture: scale, setting, clothing and narrative. They created several family portraits depicting different activities, while exploring gel paint stick media. The project included a visit to the NY Historical Society and the presentation of the books that each of the children created with portraits of their families.

2. THESEUS and the MINOTAUR: While the kids explore about mythology, they prepared a musical production of Theseus and the Minotaur. The project included adapting the script, learning theater techniques, creating props, costumes, masks and scenery, for which they worked under the guidance of Lenny and Jennie. With the help of SARAH, the Artist in Residence, the children worked in training their voices which rounds up with the musical program on going at PS3. There were two performances of the musical presented at PS3 during December of 2012.

3. ANIMALS: As a way of enriching their animal theme unit, Adam, the theater Artist in Residence, worked with some of our k/1 grade kids exploring the habitats, needs and functions of animal life. He developed physical theatre skills, dramatic character and bodywork. The project will connect with the unit by creating pieces of writing. For the project, Adam wrote some scenes with the input of teachers and students, which concluded with a presentation of the kids plays to their families and/or buddies.

4. NATIVE AMERICANS in Social Studies: With the help of Adam, the theater Artist in Residence, some of the children will be exploring on the topic of Native American Folktales. They will also be writing their own pieces and performing from a script created by Adam. The kids will be recorded at the end of the project.

A second public forum hosted by the 75 Morton Task Force (a joint subcommittee of Community Board 2 and the Community Education Council District 2) will be held on Monday, April 22nd from 6:30-8:30 in the PS41 auditorium.

The 75 Morton Envisioning Group - a group of 80+ parents and community members engaged in a facilitated process to envision possibilities and build consensus for the new school – will be sharing a summary of their consensus to date including grade configuration (one 6-8 middle school) and initial ideas on (1) Design Principles to guide the design of physical plant, (2) the District 75 program (3) Community School Model. All who have participated and/or support the consensus will be asked to stand as representatives share this group’s vision.

This lovely community experience lasts a week, beginning with Monday evening’s student readings, to which parents, teachers and staff are invited.

Refreshments will be available from 5:15 – 6:00 p.m., and readings by a selection of students from each class will last from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Children’s authors will visit the library next week to discuss books, authorship and illustration with the children.

The library will publish a schedule of “Shares” between buddy classes during the week of May 13th; this is a time when all children will share their stories, poems and written ideas with one another. Parents are welcome to attend. Please take a look at the bulletin boards on the second and third floors, which contain literary work from each classroom.

We’re looking forward to seeing you Monday evening at the main event!

Afterschool News: 10-Week Chess Program

PS 3’til 6 is happy to announce a new Special developed in partnership with New York City Chess, the Greenwich Village club of grandmasters. This 10-week program will be offered on Tuesdays, starting April 16th, and is open to students in grades 1-5. No previous exposure to Chess required.

Sessions will be led by experienced New York City Chess coaches – true enthusiasts of the game! – whose instruction philosophy emphasizes a combination of sport and fun. Children will learn and practice strategic planning, pattern recognition, self-discipline and taking responsibility for their own mistakes. PS 3 students who met the coaches through the Chess Lunch Club will have a chance to explore and improve their game.

A great opportunity to learn Chess from the pros!

It is important for PS3 that every family fill one out. So far, just 50% of PS3 parents (vs. 82% of teachers) have completed their survey! We need to do better. PS3 has received a “C” on our Progress Report for 2 years running. The percentage of parental response on this survey is a major factor in our Progress Report grade which, in turn, impacts our funding. Let’s turn this thing around!

Every year since 2007, NYC parents have voted smaller classes their #1 priority for their children’s schools, according to the Department of Education’s own annual surveys. In addition, the state passed a law in 2007 called the Contracts for Excellence (C4E), requiring that NYC reduce class size in all grades, in return for receiving additional state aid. Yet class sizes have increased every single year since then.

This year, the DOE has posted its proposed C4E plan for the current school year, and the deadline for public comment is March 18. Please send in your comment today, with a copy to John King, the State Education Commissioner. A sample message is below; feel free to change it any way you like.

As a parent of a child in a NYC public school, it is unacceptable to me:

That NYC public school students continue to be subjected to the largest class sizes in the state;
That they have been deprived of their constitutional right to an adequate education because of their excessive class sizes, according to the state’s highest court;
That class sizes have risen every year for the last five, and are now the largest in 14 years in the early grades;
That DOE continues in its latest C4E proposal to do nothing to reduce class sizes despite a law passed in 2007, requiring them to lower class size;
That DOE has never allocated a single penny of the more than $500 million in annual C4E funds to district-wide or targeted programs to lower class size;
That many of the DOE policies have in fact encouraged INCREASES in class size, including but not limited to the following:
Cutting school budgets by 14% since 2008, despite increases in overall education spending and in many other areas;
In 2010, eliminating the early grade class size funding in 2010, despite a promise to the state to keep the program intact;
In 2011, stopping capping of classes in grades 1-3 in 2011 to 28 students per class;
In 2012, demanding that special needs children be accommodated in general education and inclusion classes at maximum contractual levels, despite the fact that these students need smaller classes most of all;
Refusing to align either its school utilization formula or capital plan with class size reduction goals;
Continuing to co-locate new schools in school buildings, taking up every possible inch of space and depriving existing schools of the ability to lower class size in the future:
Holding hearings in February and March for the current year’s C4E proposal, and refusing to hold borough hearings, making a mockery of the public process required by the law.

As many of you know, Otis (former teacher) has written a book for new K–5 teachers: Everything a New Elementary School Teacher REALLY Needs to Know (But Didn’t Learn in College), available in March.

The book is based upon the workshop he developed for teachers seven years ago, “How To Survive Your First Years Teaching & Have A Life.” It’s a “little black book” of tools and tactics, covering information that most teachers have had to learn the hard way—from managing parents to walking 30 kids down the street safely on a field trip to why it’s important to keep a change of clothes in the classroom. The book is designed like a small, travel manual, and has been priced the same way, so it is affordable for teachers new to the profession.

He is asking for your help and support. If so inclined, here are a number of things you can do:

1. Buy the Book

It’s priced on Amazon at $10.87.That’s less expensive than a movie! I fought hard to have it priced this way so it’s affordable to all teachers and potential readers. Most education books are printed in hardback and are expensive. I refused to go that route.

Buying the book on Amazon will help push pre-sale numbers up. After you receive your copy, please write a review on Amzaon. This is key to building momentum. This book may not be on the shelves of local bookstores—the majority will be purchased online. Pre-orders and reviews on Amazon will mean a lot to its success. If you would rather support a more independent online bookseller, you can purchase the book from Indie Bound.

If you want to order a few and don’t know what to do with them, have those copies shipped directly to me. I will use them for promotion to government officials, school districts and universities, along with what the publisher is doing already. If you have children, giving a copy to the principal of your child’s school would be great promotion. If your child’s teacher is new to the career, give them a copy.

2. Find me on Social Media

Nothing spreads the word like social media, especially for small-market books. I use Twitter and I created a Facebook profile page. If you are on either or both, your support is greatly appreciated.

3. Tell Your Education/Teacher Friends

The second most powerful tool behind social media is your mouth. Tell your friends! The market for this book is new K–5 teachers, but it is also a valuable tool for university professors, school district heads, politicians, principals, and more. The secondary market is parents. One reader said, “This book feels like a backstage pass for parents to the elementary school classroom.” For parents who want to be more in-the-know, it will educate them about aspects of their child’s classroom that they didn’t know existed.

I know this is a lot to ask—if you do any one of these, it will be a huge help. It’s this type of grassroots networking that gets things moving. I appreciate your support and belief in this work. Please pass it on. If you have any questions or ideas, please, shoot me an email or give me a call.

Dear PS3 community,

We are happy to report that the resolution in support of a PS3 play street on Grove Street passed the full Community Board 2 tonight with all in favor and one abstention.
We are absolutely thrilled by the news and extend our undying thanks to all the parents who have supported this crucial effort – especially Denise Collins, for taking the lead so graciously & effectively, and Lisa for making the time where there was none. We ALL made a huge difference.

Do keep in mind that the CB2 resolution is merely advisory – and the proposal will now go to the Department of Transportation. However, the support of the CB2 will be invaluable with that application.

We should note that the residents of Grove Street are not a happy lot right now – and there will be work to be done to mend fences and find ways to live harmoniously together – or at least across the street. Denise is already hard at work to broker facilitated dialogue with our Grove Street neighbors.

But meanwhile, let’s rejoice that our kids will have space to play outdoors… in the not-too-distant future we hope!

The application period for the 2013 Education Council Selection Process began Wednesday, February 13, and ends March 13, 2013. Parents interested in applying to serve on a Citywide or Community Education Council can apply online or submit a paper application. Dear Speaker Quinn:

I urge you to vote no on the proposed rezoning of the Special Hudson Square District (District) unless Trinity is required to fund new recreation facilities in Hudson Square, as partial mitigation of the significant adverse impact to open space from the rezoning.

When Hudson Square is rezoned for mixed use, the development of 3.8 million square feet, including more than 3,300+ residential units, will add nearly 7-8,000+ new residents and employees into the District. Today, Hudson Square has no active open space, nor has it had any substantive infrastructure improvements in over 80 years. Hudson Square is part of Community Board 2, the second most parks-starved community in the City, with already overcrowded parks and limited opportunities for indoor recreation. Nearby facilities at the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center, J.J. Walker and Pier 40 are already heavily used by local schools, youth and adult leagues. Local schools, including Hudson Square-based NYC iSchool, travel as far as West 134th Street for home basketball games. Likewise, the new elementary school proposed for Duarte Square will be built with a “gymatorium”, staring day one with compromised indoor recreation facilities. If your goal is to make the City more amenable to the middle class, a City-approved rezoning that will add so many new residents, must also include a requirement for new active recreation facilities within the District.

In the absence of sites to develop horizontal open space in Hudson Square, going vertical, with the construction of an indoor recreation center, is the solution. Trinity would fund the core, shell and build-out and an experienced operator would be selected to run the facility. The Department of City Planning’s January 23, 2013 amendment states that the negative impact on open space could be eliminated with “nearly one acre” of active recreation space.

Trinity has the financial strength and moral obligation to do more. Trinity is one of the largest landowners in Manhattan and holds six million square feet of property in Hudson Square. With the zoning change, Trinity will develop nearly 1.9 million square feet, including nearly 1.3 million square feet of residential property. A meaningful contribution to active open space in the District will demonstrate Trinity’s willingness to continue to play “a vital role in the health and vitality of the city” as it has for “more than 300 years”, as stated in its rezoning application and give credence to the statement on its website that “the goal is to create a 24/7 neighborhood in which people are clamoring to work and live, a place that gives energy and health and vitality to its workers and residents.”

This is a one-time opportunity to create new active open space in Hudson Square. I urge you to require Trinity to fund the core, shell and build-out of new recreation center in Duarte Square.

Ashley Ingram, casting associate at Billy Hopkins Casting for the new television movie musical DEAR DUMB DIARY for the Hallmark Channel. They are looking for a leading actress.

Leading character description:

[Jamie Kelly] 10-12 years old, Caucasian. Spunky, bright and enormously creative Jamie pours her feelings into her “dear dumb diary” where she holds nothing back regarding her family, best friend Isabella, her arch-enemy Angeline, and the man of her dreams – Hudson Rivers. Jamie is prone to exaggeration and hostility, but is fundamentally harmless. She has outrageous and lively flights of fancy that usually lead to musical numbers or videos.

[Story Line] Jamie Kelly, diarist and artists, is horrified to learn that her beloved art class may be cancelled due to lack of funding, and joins the school “jump-a-thon” to raise money to keep the art program going. Along the way Jamie discovers that things and people aren’t always what they seem as she navigates the challenges of middle school. We have a family who live in the 50′s and Broadway area who are having great difficulty getting back and forth to school due to the bus strike. If you can help , please let me know. CECD2 Public Feedback Meeting on Zoning Proposal

Community Education Council District 2 to hold public feedback meeting on Department of Education’s Zoning Proposal for PS 3 and PS 41

At the February 12^th, Community Education Council District 2 zoning meeting, the Department of Education will formally propose an update to the PS3 and PS41 school zones.

The proposal would move the three blocks bounded by Perry St., Bethune St., Washington St., and West St., from the PS 41 zone to the PS 3 zone beginning with the 2014-2015 school year.

The DOE’s presentation and the proposed zoning maps are available on our website at www.cecd2.net.

At this meeting CECD2 will collect public feedback on the zoning of those three blocks.

The meeting will be held at our District Office at 333 Seventh Avenue in the 7^th Floor Conference Room.

Public feedback will also be welcome at the Calendar Meeting on Feb 27, 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM, location TBD, during which the CEC will vote on the matter.

Renee Flax, the Associate Director of the American Camp Association will also be on hand at each of the New York Family Camp Fair to answer parents’ questions and help guide them in their search for the right camp.

Parent Workshop

Resources for Children with Special Needs will be holding a special workshop for families that have children with disabilities about the important transition from school to adult life.

We are holding a special workshop on Friday, Feb. 15, titled, “Transition for Families” in English and Chinese at the Department of Education’s District 75 Main Building on First Ave and 23 street.

As wise parents know, the entitlement to education ends when a student earns a diploma or turns 21. Our topic will teach parents that have children with disabilities how to support their child’s transition to adult life early,while they are still safely in school. This workshop will be co-presented by the Manhattan Special Education Parent Center and a transition Specialist from the Department of Education

CALLING ALL MUSICIANS IN PS3!
Do you sing? Play an instrument? Would you like to play and/or sing in the PS3 AUCTION for the ARTS this year?
It’s going to be fun!!
The event will be on Friday March 8th at the fabulous Angel Orennsanz Foundation.
A band will be put together of PS3 parents for this amazing event so come on and join the band!

Thank you & Congratulations to our Alumni Committe and especially the Chair, Yin, for an evening that captured the “PS3 spirit.”Last night our auditorium was filled with former and present parents, students, and teachers. It was Our Alumni Event, and it was a truly joyous occasion. The past and present came together to celebrate PS3, and the legacy of the only school that was begun by parents. It is our 42nd anniversary and we were there to celebrate a truly unique school.

LICE!

During this recent licecheck we had the lowest number of Lice Cases since we started having regular lice checks. Let’s keep it that way.

If you find that your child has lice, please let your teacher know, and after treating your child’s hair, please bring them to Room 408 – AFTER THEY CHECK IN WITH THEIR TEACHER, – to be checked.

If we continue to work together in this way, we will keep lowering the number of lice cases.
