Congrats to our PS 3 Chess Players

Our talented fifth-grade chess players–Maria Poulos-Chachere, Theodore Poulos-Chachere, and Siddhartha “Sid” Mutha–won second place in the Reserve (K-12 Under 1500), a fiercely competitive section for the highest-rated players at the 2017 CIS Veterans’ Day Chess Tournament hosted at PS11 on Saturday, Nov. 11. The trio outperformed teams with four or more players, in an unprecedented victory, as it almost always takes at least four players to gain enough points for a section team win. First place in the category went to a high school with four players.

Maria, one of the nation’s top 25 10-year-old girl United States Chess Federation (USCF) rated players, also won all four games, tying for first place in the Reserve (K-12 Under 1500) individual standings.

Chess in the Schools (CIS) fosters the intellectual and social development of youth through chess education, and offers free tournaments throughout the city for every youth player.
