The Lunch & Recess is part of the umbrella Food, Grow, Play Committee along with the Garden, Green and Wellness Committees. We meet as a group monthly on the Wednesday after drop off before that month’s PTA meeting date.

Our committee supports the efforts of the PS3 staff to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all of our children at lunch and recess. We do regular playground maintenance, field any recess issues, coordinate volunteers for the lunchroom, and hold the kindergarten orientation every year. We welcome all parents to join us and get involved in our committee.

LUNCH VOLUNTEER

There are two K/1 lunch periods; 10:40 and 11:05. For 2/3, lunch is at 11:35 and noon.

Your help is greatly appreciated by the students, lunch aides and families that cannot be there. Please sign up for as many lunch periods as you can work. Click to View Volunteer Opportunities on SignUp.com

LUNCH VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES

  1. PLEASE PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO ALL CHILDREN.
  2. Your volunteer responsibilities include:

DURING LUNCH

    • Helping hot lunch children get their food and milk, if applicable
    • Opening containers and packages; especially K/1s
    • Assisting at the salad bar station
    • Distributing cups of water (please note, we are trying to conserve the amount of cups we use, so please use cups sparingly)

AT THE END OF LUNCH

    • Clearing the trays, trash, food off of tables and into the correct trash receptacles for K/1s; guiding 2/3s to throw out their own trash. SEE TRASH/RECYCLING/ COMPOSTING GUIDELINES BELOW.
    • Wiping down tables/chairs and sweeping the floor

3. Students need encouragement to eat their lunches. Our K/1s, in particular.

4. Students must ask permission to use the bathrooms in the gymeteria. They may go on their own. Adults are not allowed in the student bathrooms at any time.

5. Suevena and Dawn oversee lunch for all periods. Please assist them, when necessary.

TRASH/RECYCLING/COMPOSTING GUIDELINES

PS3 is a big proponent of sustainability. We actively recycle and compost and have different bins for disposal of each. Our trash, recycling and composting guidelines are below.

For K/1, the adult volunteers throw their trash away. For 2/3, it works best when one parental volunteer stands in front of the trash areas and guides the kids to dispose of trash in the proper receptacles.

Compost

  • ALL food scraps (yes, even meat, dairy, oily foods!)
  • Paper napkins/paper towels
  • Food soiled paper bags
  • Compostable trays
  • Paper boats (Trayless Tuesday paper boats)
  • Compostable cups (look like paper)

Recycling

  • Cartons (milk or juice, for example)
  • Juice boxes (tetra pack type)
  • Plastic sporks/forks/spoons
  • All rigid plastic (including straws)
  • Foil
  • Metal/glass
  • Plastic cups

 Regular Garbage/Landfill

  • Cellophane wrappers from the sporks
  • All soft plastic (plastic wrap, cookie packages, fruit roll up wrappers)
  • Foil backed paper (like a hamburger comes in)
  • Any Styrofoam
  • Squeeze tubes (like go-gurts)
  • Plastic bags (ziploc or shopping bags)
  • Capri sun type drink pouches
