If you are an new, incoming parent regardless of your child’s age, you must submit a General Health form (CH-205). If you already submitted it after your child turned five there is no need to submit an additional one.

You’ve seen the bright orange idea boxes. You’ve got til May 9th to scribble your ideas on slips of paper and drop ‘em in an idea box. We’ll sort through your ideas so that together we can develop and refine them at our Charrette Brainstorm Session on May 17. Then we’ll send out a short survey so we can rate and rank the ideas we’ve generated. And, finally, we’ll present the results back to the school community/PTA.

Your ideas and support will help to determine spending priorities for the funds we raise together!

Talent Show rehearsals have been going well.

May 18 will be a great night.

This year we are having the show in two segments:

First segment will run 6-8 (approximately). Then a ten minute intermission. Second segment will be 8:10-10:10 (approximately).

The schedule will be posted on Wednesday, May 16. We are hoping that families will stay through the entire segment to show respect to the children who perform last in their segment. Today – I checked two classes for lice, both of which had a majority of the students with either lice or nits or both. One of these classes did not have any lice a couple of weeks ago, and today there were 9 cases.   It is time we started taking control of the situation. Let’s admit that lice are a major problem in our School & let’s make it a Community Project to get rid of them.  Please join with these classes in taking a pro-active stance, regardless of whether your child’s class is infested or not check your children’s head, leave conditioner in for an hour or two, comb thoroughly and repeat and check frequently.  Thank you,  Terry

After four long years of meetings and conversations I am thrilled that we finally have an opportunity to see 75 Morton Street become a school. In a deal, not yet finalized, 75 Morton Street is on its way to becoming a New York City Department of Education owned property. Our struggle to increase classroom seats, to address ongoing school overcrowding throughout the Village, has been rewarded at long last. This building will fulfill many needs for the community.

Lisa Mayer and Sruli Dresdner gave up their corporate jobs (she-advertising, he-law) to devote themselves to enriching children through music and the arts. This decision held that the DOE’s policy is founded upon the legitimate concern that allowing religious services on school grounds violates the principle of the separation of church and state.

Despite these rulings, on Jan 4, 2012, Bill S6087-A/A8800A was introduced to the NY State Senate, aiming to authorize religious worship in school buildings. The Bill also removes the ability of the DOE to enforce its current policy restricting access by groups that discriminate against individuals based on race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or religious views.

This Bill has passed in the Senate, and a vote in the Assembly is pending.

As several city and state officials have cautioned, by requiring the DOE to permit religious worship in schools:

- Our school runs the risk of becoming viewed as a house of worship and a party to any real or perceived exclusion of the public by religious groups.

- We may be viewed as having a bias toward certain religious groups, as those that worship on Sundays, when school space is most available, have an unfair advantage over those that worship on other days of the week.

- Since the fee to use the school is nominal, covering only janitorial costs, taxpayer subsidy will now extend to religious worship.

To preserve the fundamentally scholastic purpose of school facilities, the PS3 PTA is asking for support of our school community to stand with the DOE and the NY Civil Liberties Union, the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York, Assemblymember Deborah Glick and NY State Senator Thomas Duane and demand that our state legislature uphold the Constitutional principles regarding the Separation of Church and State.

With the February Winter Break almost upon us, New York Int’l Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) is offering their partner schools discounted rates for film production workshops held February 20-24.

This February children and youth aged 6-14 will have a chance to be on the other side of the camera, learn from experts, and make their visions come to life on the big screen! Students will conceive, storyboard, write, shoot, draw, model, create sets, and act to create a completed short film, in collaboration with award-winning filmmakers. NYICFF film production workshops are offered from February 20-24. Workshops are one-week, full-day classes in animation, stop-motion, film criticism and analysis.
