1)  ELIGIBILITY & SPECIALS NEEDS
Is there a minimum age required for participation in the afterschool? We accept students in grades PreK – 5. However, some children are not quite ready to attend a program like ours. If staff members have any concerns about a child, they will contact the parent/guardian to discuss options, which may include cancellation of services (a pro-rated reimbursement will be issued for the unused portion of the semester).
Does your program offer services for children with special needs?  Unfortunately our program has limited space available and the staff is not trained to provide services for children with special needs.
The school provides extra supportive services for my child. Will the Afterschool offer the same extra services if I enroll her/him in the program? Before you register for the Afterschool program, please set up an appointment with our Site Director to discuss your child’s needs. It is very important that we have this information so we can offer adequate advice to the family.
Can my child’s afterschool services be cancelled due to behavior issues? Yes. All families agree to respect our Behavior Guidelines when they register for the program. We strongly recommend you discuss these guidelines with your child.  If staff members have any concerns about a child’s behavior, regardless of student’s age, they will contact the parent/guardian to discuss options, which may include the cancellation of afterschool services (a pro-rated reimbursement will be issued for the unused portion of the semester).
Can afterschool services be terminated for any other reason? Yes. All students and families must be committed to constructive participation and appropriate behavior, and willing to abide by the guidelines and policies established by the program, including our Rules of Conduct. The afterschool administration has the unrestricted right to terminate a student’s enrollment at its sole discretion due to behavior issues and/or the family’s failure to comply with our guidelines and policies. If services are terminated, a pro-rated reimbursement for the unused portion of the semester will be issued.

2)  AGE GROUPS & PROGRAMMING 
Why is there a 2-day minimum enrollment for K-1 students? For pedagogical reasons. Ours is a comprehensive program which involves transitions, snack and water breaks, participation in different activities, etc. It takes time for children in this age group to adjust to a new routine and a new set of supervisors and teachers. Past experience shows that students do best if they spend at least two days per week with us.
Why is pre-selection of classes for K-1 students not required? Swim and Tennis are the only classes that require pre-selection during registration. K-1 students have access to all other semester activities on a rotational basis. This approach, managed by the group’s supervisors, ensures that all children are exposed to the many different specialties available throughout the semester. IMPORTANT NOTE ** Please do not email requests for specific classes. We are unable to accommodate such requests.
How does your Program introduce PreK and K-1 students to foreign languages?  Bilingual members of our faculty introduce children to new vocabulary through playful, fun group activities like singing, dancing, cooking, and crafts. Languages vary from term to term, depending on the composition of our team. Spanish, French and Mandarin are offered most frequently.
My child is in the K-1 Group and I didn’t see any Homework Option in the schedule. Is there time in the K-1 schedule for children to complete homework? Yes. After their first period activity, K-1 students have 30 minutes of Yard Play. When they return to their home base for second period activities, the staff encourages children to complete their homework assignments before Choice Time and Recreation.
My child is in the Gr. 2-5 Group and we signed up for Homework & Recreation. What kid of support does your program offer?  The homework group is supervised by senior staff who are qualified to answer homework-related questions. All students in this group are encouraged to be focused and complete their work. However, one-on-one tutoring is not provided.
My child is in the K-1 Group but wanted to participate in a class for the older grades. Is that possible? No. For logistical and pedagogical reasons all children enrolled in the Afterschool must select age-appropriate activities. Each of our three groups – PreK, K-1 and 2-5 – has its own home base, daily routine and group leaders. Moreover, instructors design their classes with specific age groups in mind.

3)  TRANSITION TO AFTERSCHOOL
How does my child get to the afterschool program? PreK, K and 1st  graders are picked up from their classroom by our program staff.  2-5 graders walk down with their teacher and classmates. Once in the school’s dismissal area, the PS 3 teacher will ask them to join their afterschool home base. Afterschool Staffers stationed in the Dismissal areas help monitor the students’ transition.
Do I have to notify my child’s teacher of his/her afterschool plans? Yes, for safety reasons teachers need to know if your child is expected to attend the program. This applies to Semester students as well as students who sign up for an Occasional Day (Drop-In Service).

4)  DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Is everyone on the PickUp list required to show a photo ID? Yes. Please remind everyone on your child’s list to bring a photo ID.
Where do I pick up my child from the Afterschool? Pick up location will depend on your pick up time. Our receptionist will give you instructions.
Can I pick up my child before regular afterschool dismissal?  Yes, you can pick up your child any time during program hours. However, instructors strongly encourage parents/guardians to respect class times since children are usually engaged in group activities and their early dismissal is disruptive for everyone in the classroom.
Please Note ** Afterschool activities take place in multiple rooms across all six floors. For this reason, adults picking up children before regular dismissal should be prepared to wait a few minutes until the child’s room is confirmed. Thank you for your understanding and full cooperation.
Do I have to sign the Dismissal Form everyday? Yes, this is a safety procedure. The Dismissal should always be signed by the adult picking up the student, not by the child.
What happens if I pick up my child after 6:00pm? You will be asked to pay the late pickup fee of $1.00 per minute (following cell phone clocks) to the staff person who had to wait for you. This policy is strictly enforced!

5)  FOOD ALLERGIES & DIETARY CONCERNS
What kind of snacks does the afterschool provide? We offer  a variety of dry snacks. However, we cannot guarantee that your child will like what is available every day. If there are any dietary concerns, we recommend you pack your child’s favorite snack everyday s/he attends the program.
My child has food allergies. Should he bring his/her own snack? Yes. We cannot guarantee that the snacks available will meet your child’s dietary needs or restrictions. If there are any food allergies, or nutrition concerns, children should bring their own snack.
How will I know that my child will eat from his lunchbox?  If you don’t want your child to eat the snack offered in the afterschool, please email your request to our office. Your message will be given to the staff person supervising your child’s activities.
If my child has dietary restrictions, can s/he still participate in cooking classes? Yes. Children will not be asked to handle or eat specific foods if they have allergies or other dietary constraints. However, if the health risks are severe, we recommend you select a different activity for your child.

6)  CLASS CANCELLATIONS & STUDENT ABSENCES
What happens is one of my child’s classes is cancelled because the instructor was absent? When a teacher is absent, we try to find a substitute instructor so there is no disruption in the schedule. When a substitute is not available, we allow the students enrolled in that class to participate in another class of their choice that day. No credits or refunds will be issued under these circumstances.
If my child misses any days or classes during the semester, will we get a credit? We cannot reimburse families if their child fails to attend a scheduled day or class.
Do I need to notify the PS3 ’til 6 Staff if my child is going to miss any day of afterschool? It is very important that you notify your child’s day-time teacher so s/he is not released to the program. You can also email the afterschool office (optional).
My schedule has changed this week. Can my child attend the program on different weekdays this week only? Unfortunately, program staff are hired based on semester enrollment so changing weekdays is not an option. However, you can sign up for DropIn service if you need your child to come in on a day s/he does not normally attend.
Since Monday of this week was a holiday, can I send my child to afterschool on a different day to make up for it?Same answer as above.

7)  BEHAVIOR, GUIDELINES  & COMPLIANCE
Can my child be suspended from the program for behavior issues? Yes. The registration process includes a Waiver regarding Behavioral Guidelines that all parents/guardians sign when they register for the program. We strongly recommend you discuss these guidelines with your child. If staff members have any concerns about a student’s behavior, regardless of student’s age, they will contact the parent/guardian to discuss options, which may include program suspension (a pro-rated reimbursement will be issued for the unused portion of the semester).

8)  CONCERNS & FEEDBACK
What should I do if I have a concern about my child’s participation?  We welcome feedback from all families. If you have any concerns, or simply want to make a suggestion, please speak with our site director.  Makkeda is usually in the lobby or Gymeteria during dismissal. You can also send an email to the afterschool office and ask to setup an appointment with the site director.
